The sixth edition of PMM has been rewritten, consolidating a 47-chapter book into a resource ideally suited for a 16-week semester. PMM6 includes the most up-to-date information on current industry trends, strategic planning for meetings, budgeting and funding, marketing and promotion, technology, running and closing the meeting, and industry trends on the horizon.
Highlights of this edition include: quick reference to the main topics in each chapter, mapping to CMP International Standards, Key Points and Questions callouts in the margin to facilitate student comprehension and review, Sustainability in Practice features, Chapter Summaries, Key Words, Discussion Questions, and contributions from over 70 known industry professionals.
Each chapter includes a dedicated section to corporate social responsibility and its practical application for today’s meetings and events professionals.
These boxes are found in the margins for quick reference and highlight key concepts or terms for an easy review.
Meeting professionals ask a lot of questions as a means of learning about a site and venue and to help make decisions. Key Questions boxes provide important questions relevant to the chapter content; they are designed to stimulate thought and class discussion as well as provide guidance on collecting information for decision-making.
Each chapter features a scenario posing a situation that requires critical thinking and reflective discussion or writing for resolution. The scenarios put students in a professional quandary, which may have legal or ethical components, and asks them how they would react or respond.
This edition aligns with the Convention Industry Council’s (CIC) CMP International Standards (CMP-IS). The Standards include 10 domains, 33 skill, and 105 subskills. On each chapter opening page, the domain, skills, and subskills covered in the chapter have been identified.
The following ancillaries will be made available to instructors using PMM, 6th Edition.
The Chapter Summary is written to amplify and enhance the Overview and Summary content provided in the textbook. This section includes a list of Core Competencies for the chapter. Each competency is written with measurable verbs that can be appropriately assessed.
This is an easily searchable version of the Key Words included in the book. The definitions in the glossary are provided for terms not located in APEX Industry Glossary, because that resources is readily available online.
There are two PowerPoint presentations available for each chapter: one that is relevant to students, and one that is designed primarily for the instructor and can be used for classroom lectures.
Quizzes are formatted in a Microsoft Excel spreadsheet, which enables instructors to easily upload the file to Blackboard or an associated institution platform. A Microsoft Word document is also available for instructors to copy and use as a handout in the classroom. There are at least six multiple-choice items and four true / false items per chapter. The items conform to the CMP Certification Test Items.
This element includes Internet resources such as videos, animations, and other appropriate resources. The list of supporting components includes the title of the resource and the objective it aligns with, and a two- or three-sentence description that provides the instructor with guidance in determining what could be incorporated into the instructor’s curriculum planning. A functioning URL and the date the URL was accessed appears with each citation.

“PCMA represents a collective body of knowledge for the Meeting, Incentives, Conference, and Exhibition sector. It provides planners, suppliers, and academics a common voice by leveling the playing field for more involvement in the industry. As a hospitality professor, it provides a guide for students to understand that the events industry is more than just a passing interest, it is a tool to create experiences for guests and an economic driver from public and private companies all the way to municipalities and government.”
—Dr. Erinn D. Tucker, Assistant Professor, Boston University, School of Hospitality Administration
“As a faculty member, I prepare the next generation of hospitality management professionals and it is essential for me to keep updated with industry trends. The PCMA annual convention has been my one-stop shop continuing education repository with engaging and relevant sessions. Some many individuals I have met through PCMA have provided internship and full-time job opportunities for my students. Special kudos to the POWER chapter. They may be small but they sure are mighty!”
—Swathi Ravichandran, MBA and a PhD, Associate Professor and Program Director, Hospitality Management, Kent State University
“Academically, Professional Meeting Management is a must-have resource for students and faculty.
